Mission Churches and African Customary Marriage

This article traces the historical and theological development of European-oriented Church marriages and their imposition on African Christians by mission organizations. This practice has created social, legal, and moral dilemmas due to the co-existence of customary and civil marriage systems, particularly regarding church discipline when couples consummate their marriage after customary ceremonies but before a church wedding. The paper offers a theological and pastoral response by proposing an "African Christian Customary Marriage Ceremony"—a paradigm shift that integrates customary practice, civil registration, and divine blessing directly within the community, establishing valid Christian unions while mitigating marital confusion and financial strain.
